The NutriBullet Blender Review: When Smart Technology Meets Nutrition

It seems like every time I turn around I see another ad or infomercial for the Nutribullet blender. Forbes even chose it as the best personal blender of the year.

Nutrition-extracting personal bullet blenders have become extremely popular. And the best thing about them is that they allow you to add a lot more fruit and vegetables to your diet.

But are they worth all of the hype? And do they really work?

I’m a big fan of smoothies. I’ve spent a small fortune buying them several times a week for lunch at my local smoothie shop. Two years ago I broke down and bought an expensive fancy-dancy juicer so that I could make my healthy drinks at home.

But my juicer is big and bulky and a pain in the neck to drag out of the cabinet. And don’t even get me started on the mess. As you can imagine, I hardly ever use it. So now I’m on a mission. I’m looking for a way to make smoothies at home that is quick and convenient and won’t cost me an arm and a leg.

What Does the NutriBullet Blender Do?

NutriBullet, sometimes called Nutri Bullet, was the first company to coin the term “nutrient extractor.” NutriBullet says that their bullet blenders break down the cell walls of high-fiber plant ingredients. This releases the vitamins and minerals in the food. The NutriBullet blender pulverizes fiber, seeds, pulp, and skins into a smooth drinkable texture, making food more easily digestible and more easily absorbed.

But there is some controversy on whether or not the NutriBullet blender and other bullet blenders can give you more nutrients than just eating the fruits and vegetables.

Bruce German, a food chemistry professor at the University of California, explains that nutrient extraction blenders can make some nutrients more available. But they can also cause other nutrients to be less available. “It has to be tested ingredient by ingredient,” he said. “A lot of the science that either substantiates or refutes this just hasn’t been done.”

NutriBullet Blender or Juicer? Which Is Better?

At first glance, a juicer and a NutriBullet blender may seem the same. But their difference lies in their output. With a traditional juicer, you only get the juice out of the produce you use. They extract out the insoluble fibrous pulp, leaving just the liquid. So you miss out on some of the nutrients from your fruits and vegetables. A NutriBullet blender, on the other hand, doesn’t extract anything out. Instead, it pulverizes the entirety of whatever you put into it.

The NutriBullet Blenders

In this review we looked at four Nutribullet blenders: the original NutriBullet blender, the NutriBullet Pro, the NutriBullet Balance, and the NutriBullet Rx. Each has their own unique features that make separate them from the others.

The NutriBullet Pro

The NutriBullet Pro is a step up from the original and features a 900-watt motor. And it has the same stainless steel blades for the cyclonic action. With this NutriBullet blender, you can get up to seven servings of fruit and vegetables per smoothie. It has a capacity of up to 32 ounces.

The NutriBullet Pro comes with the power base, two “colossal” cups, and an emulsifying blade. It also comes with two flip-top lids and four lip rings. And it comes with a one-year manufacturer’s warranty.

This NutriBullet blender costs anywhere from $60 to $100. And like the original, it gets very high ratings. Most customer complaints about this blender are that the parts break too quickly which can cause it to leak.

The NutriBullet Balance

The NutriBullet Balance is another step up, and it includes smart technology. It features an even more powerful motor at 1,200 watts.

The best thing about this NutriBullet blender is that it uses Bluetooth technology to connect to your smart device, allowing you to calculate the exact nutritional value of your smoothie in real-time as you add each ingredient. You can get up to seven servings of fruit and vegetables per smoothie with this blender. And it has a capacity of up to 32 ounces.

The balance comes with a power base with a smart nutrition sensor, two “colossal” cups, and an extractor blade. It also comes with two flip-top to-go lids and two lip rings. And like the other NutriBullet blenders, it comes with a one-year warranty.

Most buyers love this NutriBullet blender. But some people complained that the app still needs improvement.

The NutriBullet Rx

The NutriBullet Rx is the mac-daddy of all of the NutriBullets. It is the most technologically advanced, and it features a crazy powerful 1,700-watt motor. And it has a heating cycle for hot soups. It’s also programmable and has a hands-free auto start/stop function.

With this NutriBullet blender, you can get a whopping 12 servings of fruit and vegetables per smoothie. It’s also more substantial than the other NutriBullets, with a capacity of up to 45 ounces.

The Rx comes with the power base, an extractor blade, and a pitcher with a two-piece lid. It also comes with a short cup, an oversized cup, a stay-fresh lid, and a lip ring. It also comes with a one-year warranty.

The NutriBullet Rx costs $100 to $260, depending on where you buy it, and it gets outstanding reviews. One of the complaints about it is that it leaks if you don’t tightly screw all of the parts down (but, really, whose fault is that?). Another complaint is that replacement parts and accessories are expensive.

How the NutriBullet Blender Stacks up to the Competition

For some comparison, we also looked at three other popular bullet blenders. Each of these is an excellent product in their own right so don’t ignore them just because they’re not made by Nutribullet.

Nutri Ninja BL455 professional 1000 watts personal blender

This Ninja blender has a powerful 1,000-watt motor. But it doesn’t come with any of the smart technology that the NutriBullet Balance and Rx have. It has a 24-ounce capacity, and it comes with the motor base, three cups, and pro extractor blades. It also comes with two sip and seal lids and a one-year manufacturer’s warranty. The accessories are BPA-free and dishwasher safe.

The Ninja blender costs $60 to $80, and it gets outstanding reviews. The Ninja is similar in price and wattage to the NutriBullet Pro. But in side-by-side comparisons, most people preferred the NutriBullet because it does a better job with substantial ingredients and produce that is still whole, with stems and skin intact.

Chulux Smoothie Bullet Blender Maker

The Chulux bullet blender is another moderately priced but powerful machine. It features a 1,000-watt motor, and it has a 35-ounce capacity. One unique thing about this blender is that it has overheating protection. If the motor is improperly used or overheats it shuts itself off to prevent damage to the machine.

Once it cools off, it can be activated again. Another nice thing about it is that you can use it as a grinder as well as a blender. So it can make a smoothie as well as grind your coffee beans. The Chulux blender comes with a power base, a six-leaf extractor blade, and a two-leaf grinding blade. It also comes with a large jar, a small container, two seal lids, and one travel lid. And like the NutriBullet blenders, it comes with a one-year warranty.

Vitamix S30 Personal Blender

The Vitamix S30 is considerably more expensive than any of the NutriBullet blenders. It has a 40-ounce capacity, but with a 790-watt motor, it’s not as powerful. The Vitamix does, however, have variable speed control and a pulse feature. It comes with the power base, a travel cup with a lid, and a larger pitcher with a lid. It also comes with a low-profile tamper and a stainless steel blade base.

And it has a 40-ounce capacity. One great thing about this blender is that it also comes with a 5-year full warranty and a 30-day guarantee. And unlike the NutriBullets, which they make in China, the Vitamix is made in the United States.

The Vitamix S30 is an excellent blender, but it will cost you a pretty penny. But like the other bullet blenders on our list, it gets very high customer ratings. When compared with the NutriBullet Rx, the Vitamix tends to win because of superior design and quality. But it costs twice as much.

It All Comes Down to This

Of the seven blenders that we reviewed, our favorite was the NutriBullet Pro because it gives you the best bang for your buck. And for the vast majority of people, it will do the job. But if you’re looking for the best of the best and price isn’t a concern, then you can’t go wrong with the Vitamix S30. We still prefer the NutriBullet Rx however because it’s half the price of the Vitamix and it has tons of cool technology. The NutriBullet blenders are very popular and with good reason. So are they worth all of the hype? I would say so, yes.

We’d love to hear from you. Tell us in the comments about your favorite bullet blender and share your favorite recipe.
